What do the first few sessions of couples therapy look like?
I do everything I can to make this important step inviting and comfortable. The quality of the relationship you develop with your therapist is essential to successful therapy, so I’ll focus on getting to know you and letting you get to know me. I’ll ask a lot of questions, do a lot of listening, and as I become more familiar with your relationship, offer ideas for areas of therapeutic focus. My intention is to create an environment where you and your partner feel safe and supported to do the work you came to do.
What’s different about Big Heart Counseling?
I focus on what’s most important to you: the most vital relationship in your life. I specialize in relationships and have successfully worked with thousands of relationships, each unique and each teaching me new subtleties about the nature of relationships. Couples work is my focus. And when so much is at stake, you’ll want a therapist who understands the complex nature of relationships and who understands the nuance required to help you move out of old dynamics and into a more connected and satisfying life together.
How often will we meet?
Therapy is most effective when done in a consistent manner, so I recommend weekly sessions when possible, or twice per month. That said, I know schedules and other factors can play into the decision as well and I’m flexible to find a schedule that works for you.
Do you offer virtual couples therapy?
Yes! My platform is HIPPA compliant, very easy to use, and allows busy partners to be in different locations for the session. Check out my online therapy page or contact me to schedule an appointment today.
What is an LMFT?
LMFT stands for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Becoming an LMFT in Wisconsin is a rigorous process that requires a masters degree in counseling psychology, several thousand hours of supervised training focusing on family relationships and couple relationships, as well as ongoing education in the field throughout the therapist’s career. In short, LMFTs are highly trained mental health clinicians who specialize in relationships.
What are the benefits of private pay?
I don’t take insurance but can offer an invoice or a superbill for possible insurance reimbursement. Insurance companies generally do not cover couples counseling, though I recommend reaching out to your insurance provider to confirm this for your specific policy. Insurance companies also require a mental health diagnosis and their involvement subjects your treatment decisions to a third party that may not prioritize your well-being.
At Big Heart Counseling, you are in control of your therapy, your information is private, and your therapist is focused on you. I believe in the work I do and I prioritize my independence as professional so that I can provide the best possible service to you.
I also work with a set number clients at a reduced fee of $100/session. Please inquire with me if you require a reduced fee.
